Help identify newer Silvertone Radio
8/4/2010 8:32:04 PMBob Segneri
tried the number on the back right corner and the numbers on the tuning cap but can't seem to find the radio. Even tried looking on Ebay. Cleaned up all the switches and AM works great but can't get anything on FM. Tried a signal generator on FM and the radio I listen to picked it up but not the silvertone. Freaked out the cat with the tone
Thanks in Advance everyone

Sir Matt. . . . .

Well the whole UNCORRUPTED URL provided a picture set this time around.

Looks like a sub-contracted build up for them and not to much concern for identification, if you don't even find the common Silvertone ID tag on it.

Now confirm, that faceplate is plastic with a highlighted hot stamped mylar overcovering to "sTimulate" a chromed surface finish, where it's not being black plastic.

The faceplate looks '70ish while the electronics chassis looks very late '60ish upwards, thru the 70's on up to the invasion of IC's being used in the IF /Detector functions in the early 80's.

What I am seeing on the chassis photo, is the tuner function at the bottom right corner.
The then, outputing of its RF signal into the centrally mounted IF strip, coming in at the far right side and its IF signal flow to the left.

It ends up at the extreme left end as detected audio.

If being FM, it flows down and into the left end of the FM demultiplexer , mounted at the bottom of the chassis,(showing its hefty 19 and 38 Khz ferrite encased inductors, and the 2 smaller 67 and 71 khz traps) and there is the AF audio R and L outputting to be further amplified and tone processed and eventually be ending up at the AF audio output sections.

That of which, seems to be involving a T0-66 AF output transistor (or a set ?) mounted to the chassis substructure metal to the left end of the photo for heat sinking, where you can see its one top hat sticking out.

Over on the opposite tuner side you can see the same treatment for the other channel, with its TO-66 peeking out..

I would suspect a remoted power transformer with the wiring coming up to the chassis proper and possibly a DC regulator stage and tubular multisection filter and the power supply being all hidden behind that massive metal dial scale infrastructure.

A peek behind it . . . should reveal / confirm.

It might be helpfull on the age guesstimation of the set, to search all of the major components for being code dated, of which that electrolytic cap in the power supply might have a 68-17 ? 70-34 ? or so on it, or the same might be true for the tuning condenser frame or the sets external speakers, having being code dated, unless they are all being sealed up from access.

Also check stamping numbers on the power transformer.

THENNNNN a checking of SAMS near that year probably might reveal it actually being covered in one of their TSM series.

Also, while snooping, check the number on the AF output transistors, to then confirm if possibly them being in the newer silicon era, but as for the TO-1 encased IF transistors I see, I am sort of suspecting them to be old 2nd generation PNP germanium units.

Cleaned up all the switches and AM works great but can't get anything on FM.

Will probably end up being under the top portion . . with its metal shield covered area . . . of the mounted tuner assembly, mounted at the bottom right corner of the chassis superstructure.

You will probably find an injected 10.7 making it thru the IF strip.

. . . Freaked out the cat with the tone . . .

With their own mindset, along with quirky self eccentricities and fierce independence . . . indeed . . . cats sometimes REQUIRE that occassional " freaking out ". IMHO.

What say you . . . ?

:Thanks ED, I'll start looking for numbers for the dates. OH, the cat has calmed down and returned to the shop.
