Philco Mystery Remote Control Question
7/16/2001 7:02:42 PMPeter Noeth
I had posted this question last week, and it disappeared off this forum, so here it is again.

I have a Philco 40-216 radio (World's Fair?) that has the remote control. The rotary dial on the remote is a little warped, which prevents it from turning smoothly. Does anyone have any recommendations as to how I might remove the warp in the dial (heat gun?)? It is a pinkish tan marbled plastic dial and I am not sure what type of plastic it is, so I am not sure what applying heat to straighten it may do to it. Can anyone advise me?

Are you sure the dial is warped? I have one of these, too and the problem was inside. There are rubber bushings inside that dry up, harden and crumble. I had to fabricate a metal bracket and solder it in place to keep the dial shaft in the proper position.

I had this same problem. Several years ago I tried
to take the warp out of the dial by dipping it in
very hot water then pressing it flat. To save you the
frustration, my attempt was a disaster! The plastic
shrunk then ended up dis-integrating completely.
I ended up machining a piece of 1/4" plexiglass
into a circle and boring the finger holes in it.
I must admit, the clear plexi dial looks stunning!
(although not original) Doc.
