Thanks for the effort but it is NOT the same model 40 ( believe it or not ).

The unit I have is a battery set from the 1920s with 4 and 5 pin tubes.

Try this one:

http://www.nostalgiaair.org/PagesByModel/876/M0039876.pdf

It was listed in Official Radio Service Manual as being on the same page as 30. Does it match?

That looks right!

I discovered it on our site by rechecking the model number, although my radio just says "Model 40". It does appear to be the right vintage.

So-o, does anyone know what type of tubes this unit may have used? It does appear that they have to be newer that say 201A's ( I think )

Lou

Radios in those days used versions of 01A, 201A etc. Some tried 00A as a detector or 71A as output. These require changes in plate voltage or bias.

In your radio 01A's will work in all stages. Schematic shows output stage can be biased at -9 volts (01A) or -27 volts (71A) so either tube could be used.

In early days of radio they were sold without tubes. Buyers would get their own set of tubes but few types were available so it was mostly 01A's.
