:I know this is an antique radio forum I didn't have a website for a TV forum so I apologize. I have sought radio help many times before from this forum. I'm having a long discussion with a friend to prove to him that leaving the red light, probably an LED, on after he shuts off the TV with his cable remote draws miniscule power and doesn't hurt the TV. He also puts his ear to the speaker and hears a very low level sound and he feels he has to shut the power off on the TV, extinguish the light and the lovel sound because he feels its hurting the TV. To turn the TV on he has to turn the TV power switch on and press the cable button on the remote. I remember there's a name for this feature. Any way I welcome discussion with this. What is it a relay in the TV that remains energized? After all he defeats the putpose of a remote if he has to go to the the TV all the time to turn it on and off.

This reminds me of the time I was about 10 years old and discovered the NE-2 neon bulb. I built a little night light to put in the hall so you could find your way to the bathroom. A NE-2 and about a 100k resistor drew something close to zero current, but my mother would not let me have a light on all night in the hall when nobody was using it.

I did the same in my home about 20 years ago. Mounted a NE2 & resistor at each switch so when switch is off the neon glows. Helps to find the way at night. NE2 wired this way draws 1/25 watt. Almost nothing even when figured for a year...

::: Would this be a 'stand-by' mode? Check the owners manual for information about this function and if there's a setting to bypass it directly to 'off'. Drawing unneeded current while the TV isn't being used is wasteful (see vampire electronics), but wouldn't hurt it.

::Thanks Walter.
::"Stand-by " mode. I knew there was a term for this. You're right about wasteful energy especially in the current "green" quest.

Norm:
To my folks, a light burning was a light costing money. Volts, Ohms, milliAmpers, and milliWatts made no difference. The friction of the bearings and gears in the electric meter made that free light, but they couldn't get it.
