Sparton model 5-26

Does anyone have this set (hooked up to an Arbe 111 power supply) so that I could get some information. My set has 2 additional wires braided together and I don't know what they are for.

Hi Andy

Where do they connect in the schematic? Sometimes grounds are braided wire. Maybe "A" battery?

That's what I thought until looking at the second schematic. Must be two with the same model number.

Carl and Norm: the schematic is shown in the following location:
-go to Sparks-Withington and click on model 5-26
-select Riders volume 1-Sparton 1-3
The 5-26 is the top schematic (2 schematics are shown on this page).
The other 2 pages shown are of an a/c set and appear to be incorrect

Sir Andy. . . . . .

In consulting ye olde schematic . . . one would find the "C" battery terminal post sets and the companion "B" terminal posts sets normally having just short jumper wires installed for circuit continuity.

By looking at where those wires are connected, could we assume that they just actually might be the C and B battery extender wires used by the last user in order to reach to the battery storage area when the unit was used with that extra final AF tube?

I just looked at the schematic for this set.

Norm and Edd; thanks for your input. On further inspection I noticed that 5 of the lead spade tips were stamped as follows: B+Amp, B+Det, B-, C+, C-. That left 2 missing leads, A+ and A- according to the schematic and they must be the pair of braided leads which do not have any spade tips and thus were not identified.
David Snow from Arbeiii was kind enough to send a drawing of how the Sparton 5-26 should be hooked up to the battery Eliminator:
Lead C- connects to C-4.5
Lead C+ connects to C+
Lead B- connects to B-
Lead B+Det connects to B22
Lead B+Amp connects to B90
Lead A- connects to A-
Lead A+ connects to A+

I got that all hooked up and then I found 2 more loose spade tipped leads; one stamped B- and the other stamped B+. I hooked up the B- lead to the B- connection on the Arbeiii and not really knowing where to hook up the B+ lead I hooked it up to the B22 connection on the Arbeiii. I might be wrong with this last B+ wire.
I turned on the set and only 2 of the 5 tubes light and I'm able to control the brightness in these 2 tubes. (All 5 tubes tested OK). The 2 dial lamps light up ok. I have tried both a Brandes headset and a Majestic horn speaker but get no sound. I really didn't expect any with only 2 of 5 tubes lit!!!. I did not have a ground connection.

So I suppose I'll now have to remove the chassis and do some troubleshooting.

Check pin contact with the sockets. Older type sockets depend on end contact with a tube pin. They often have poor contact.

Do you have a second rheostat to control other tube filaments. Might be a contact problem there.

:Norm; I checked the pin contacts and they appear to be fine. Yes, there are 2- 10ohm rheostats; the left hand one controls the 2 tube filaments which are working and the right hand rheostat controls the 3 tube filaments which are not lighting. I haven't had a chance to get the chassis out of the cabinet yet but will do this as soon as I can. Thanks again for your suggestions.

Norm and Edd; SUCCESS !!!!!! I removed the chassis, turned it over and sure enough the lead from the right hand rheostat which controls the 3 201A's had become disconnected from the heater pin. After soldering it back on and reconnecting my Arbeiii the set came to life picking up numerous stations with my "slinky" antenna connected to the "short" antenna post. I was absolutely thrilled to get it working and I owe it all to you Norm and to you EDD for your kind help. THANKS A MILLION !!!!

Andy
