Small project = Big Problem

I wanted to set up a CD player and speakers in shrubbery front of house to play patriotic songs/music on the days I display flags (Memorial, Flag, Veterans[Armastice],Labor, etc.) and thought I'd use a cheep portable CD player and a pair of Commputer Desk speaker as they have a built in amp. First problem was the speakers have a USB connector plug rather than a wallhog DC adaptor.I over came that problem with a USB powered hub that was a transition piece (when USB was growing but your computer had only one or two USB jacks you could add this) Well, that supplys the 5V through the USB plug but no sound! When I put it back on a computer it works fine. It appears that the data lines (the other two wires in USB plug) have to be connected to something. I had though the USB only supply power to the speakers but I'm obviously wrong. Does anyone know if I can get the amp to work wiout computer? Is there a way to connect a resistor or something across data terminal and fake out amp? Any ideas would be welcome. I thought this would be a snap but I may have to go out and buy a speaker unit that has the wallhog on it . PL

Sir PL . . . . . .

So you have a set of USB interfacing speakers and are wanting to use them.
With your having solved the power up situation, but the real kicker now is that only would be using those outermost terminals of the USB connector for their power busses but then wanting a multiplexed digital audio stream to be coming in on the center two . . . digital serial input . . and digital ground terminals..

Well what is now your problem is that the internal electronics of those USB speaker sets additionally have the full equivalency of a sound card designed within its circuitry in order to accomplish that task, in addition to your expected audio preamps and audio output sections for the actual speakers.

If my problem to solve, I would just be seeking out garage sales, thrift stores, flea markets, etc to locate a bargain on the conventional analog RCA /miniature phone/stereo mini phone jax input speaker sets with the one unit housing the electronics.

Many are the times when I can get them for a dollar a piece, or possibly having to pay the big-bux for a pair at $2.98-3.98 at a thrift store.

This even sometimes being JBL's or Harmon Kardons.
But most have sort of wised up on any of the less seen woofer units pricing a wee bit . . . just mainly due to their required larger physical profiles.

Orrrrrr . . . they do make a $69 converter to do what you initially wanted to do . . . ha-ha.

Hi- Keep in mind that no matter what type of computer speaker you use, the volume is going to be pretty low outside. I'd bite the bullet and get a nice mono amp from MCM or Parts Supply, and a decent speaker, maybe even a horn.
Just a thought.

Why the need to locate the CD player and amp out there too?

Why not just simply run some speakers out there and keep ALL the amp and electronics indoors?

Thanks guys. What I did is went down to thrift store and picked up the conventional speakers for $12. These have a built in wallhog and are stereo. I agree the volume will be low but the whole idea was a fast and simple set-up - as you can see that didn't happened. With the speakers I picked up the CD player works fine through them.
Edd, the speakers that have the USB have a seperate audio. In other words same wiring only the addition of the two USB data lines as on the wallhog models. The audio, however, is fed through the seperate autio line. I can plug the USB into my computer and then fed the CD player through the audio jack and it works. So the data lines are receiving some kind of signal that tells the speaker to play but its not the audio feed. Crazy, but most likely makes sense to a computer techie. Again, thank you for your help and the song suggestions. PL
