Philco 87 question
5/12/2010 11:58:43 PMMicro9
Philco 87 chassis has been rebuilt...new caps resistors tubes...I algined it according to the procedure on Philco Radio.com and neturalize the set as well....Radio plays with plenty of voulmm from about 700 up to 1600 but low volumm on stations 700 and below.....anu ideas???Thanks...

Hi

Philco 87 is a TRF radio. All four sections of the tuner must track together. If plates of one section aren't centered sensitivity toward the low end will be reduced.

I tried the link you sent but it appears to be broken...I will try to look at the Tuning caps this weekend...Thanks for the info!!!!

Thanks Norm I got it....Now it looks like I have an open RF coil for 1st RF tube....took it apart it is broken in 4 diffent spots.....
Anyone have an RF coil for a Philco 87 that they would like to part with????

Sir Micro9 . . . . .

I pulled out my Playthings of the past Excell Spreadsheet that I made up and found in this excerpt that there was:

http://www.oldradioparts.com/philco.txt

Order Nr . . . . Brand . . . . . . . . . .Model . . . . . .. Quantity. . . . . . Item. . . . . . . . . . . . New /Used. . . . Qty . . . Price

1461-024. . . . PHILCO 87 . . . MODEL 87 . . ., SET OF 4 . . . TRF COIL . . . . . . . . . . . . .U . . . . . . . . . 1 . . . . $6.00

Or r r r r if that stock is not available, this just might be the time for you initiate yourself into the fine art of R.F. coil winding.

....took it apart it is broken in 4 diffent spots

And would that be breaks right AT terminal to wire interfaces , by virtue of wire erosion from " copper sulphate blue-green glooooompths" or have you already started skewing off turns and finding internal wire winding breaks ?

Also if the wire is enamelled or single cotton covered enamelled ?

And could you further clarify as to it being the 1st grid circuitry of the 1st R.F. amp (Item 2) or its companion
plate circuit transformer coupling into the 2nd RF amp (Item 6) . . . and as to which specific winding(s) are being found bad ?

Gary from Playthings is on Vac till Monday and I can e-mail him then...I have purchased several other Xformers from him and he is great to deal with...Now getting back to the radio...the winding that is open goes fron the plate to the bypass cap/resistor combo and is thin enamaled wire and is on the upper part of the coil...

Sir Micro9 . . . . .

Well . . . and that's HEAVY on the WELL . . .just how lucky could you get with it being the less critical of the two windings on that RF tranformateur.

If you happen to be a little antsy on immediately achieving evaluation of just but a slightly less than full performance of that unit, it would be permissible to sub in a 4.7 k plate load resistor for the open primary of the plate of that 1st stage.

You then interstage couple from the top RF side of the resistor over to the 1st grid buss of the next stage with an ~22-47pf silver mica and then fire up the set for evaluation.

As for that current open winding on the primary, it is the absolute less critical of the two windings, as it is not involved with being a resonant circuit with that particular section of the ganged tuning condenser.

It basically just a very broadband series resonant circuit in conjunction with the tube plate capacitance . . . you might define it as a quasi RF choke with its main functionality from its RF inductive coupling capabilituies to its companion inductance of the resonant circuit placed just beside it .

Should your PTOP part(s) not still be available, just step up and take count of the turns of wire on that winding along with its start and finish and direction of wind so as to then be replicated in the same manner on the rewind.
You may also not have a micrometer to evaluate wire gauge . . . but that never stopped me at ~ 13 yrs of age, whereupon I merely consulted the copper wire table in an ARRL handbook as per turns per inch and then found the wire size by taking but a short length of my wire to fill in an inch of a closewound layer on one of mom's longer sewing needles.

Here is the same wire chart for referencing:

With the number of turns involved, you might find that the typical gauge used might usually be anywhere from # 32-38 . . . not uber critical on this winding.

Standing by . . . . .

Edd...
Thanks for the info on the cap and resistor to sub for that winding...I however got brave and unwound the wire counting turns and direction...scaped the ends of the broken wire and soldered(just a drop) the wire back together and rewound the coil..WHEW...Put it back together and the radio now gets the lower station loud and clear.....
