Hello All,
I have no idea what's going on but I can turn the tuning knob all I want but the dial pointer and tuning slugs don't move. They do move when the push buttons are pressed. So the mechanism isn't jammed. Also, I cannot find the buffer capacitor. Maybe it fell out. I can find it on the schematic but not in the radio.
This is a Philco Packard car radio made in 1949.
Please help if you can.
Thanks,
Dave

There is a clutch in the tuning mechanism, when you push a button the clutch releases. When you tune manually the clutch stays engaged. The clutch pressure is adjustable. There is a screw on the pressure disk that holds it to the tuner shaft. To adjust this clutch, push in a button and hold it down, loosen the screw and slide the disk plate over just very little for just a smaller gap. May have to adjust a few times to get it correct.
The buffer capacitor is connected to the vibrator and transformer. It may be someone has removed it for replacement, but never finished the job. Be sure it is there before testing the radio.
