Distorted Fm Signals on Ge 408 radio

I had to replace the selenium rectifier on this unit. I put in a diode? in its place.. Dont remember the exact name of the part. After radio is on about 5 mins the signal, becomes distorted.. I tested the 35c5 tube on a tester, and it tests good, but just for giggles I put in another 35c5, which tested good as well. Could it be a detector tube? Help?

Did you replace the electrolytic capacitors in the power supply and all the ancient wax capacitors? You owe the set at least this. Also, the diode you substituted for the selenium rectifier has a much lower "loss", so you should probably add a resistor in series to lower the B+. I reckon 100 ohms at 10 watts located somewhere where it won't burn anything up would be about right.

:Okay, did it work at all before you replaced the rectifier? How did it sound if it did? Do you have a scope to the check the discriminator output? Signal tracer? Do you have a signal generator to attempt an alignment. Oh, and why is there a question mark behind the word "Diode'?

I dont yet have a signal generator, to attempt a alignment, or a signal tracer yet.. I tested all the tubes, and found 3 that showed bad, the worst was the 12au6, So I replaced all three. The 35c5 showed dead as well, so It was replaced. I tested all the tubes before replacement. I recently received about 12 boxes of tubes from a radio and tv repair shop going out of business. I KNOW THAT TUBES DONT NORMALLY have many faults, but Im trying to trace what I can. I think adding the resistor would probably be a good idea, but the only issue is where do I solder it in place.. ????
