Schematic or Photofact for Grundig

Looking for info on Grundig 98U. Schematic or Photofact. This radio works well on AM but no FM. Time to get into it as it has been setting on bench for tooo long. Anyone got any tips on FM issues with this 3 tuber?

Thanks Dennis. Do you do much FM work?

Scott - info has been sent.

As far as your FM problem goes, perhaps you should do a thorough check of the bandswitch.......the FM contacts could be damaged or maybe just in need of a cleaning. Murphy's law will probably prove otherwise but a simple fix of the switch would be great.

Good luck with your project

Thanks Dennis, Info received. Very nice copy.
I'll check that switch out. Good suggestionl.

Sir Scott . . . . . .

In looking at that bare bones sets design . . . . are you within 5 miles of your FM stations . .ha ha.

I have marked up the schema and don't remember if that sets pushbuttons switching contacts happen to be silver plated.

Discernible by their blackened appearance with time and environs.

I have marked up all of the applicable ones with the aqua boxes as well as the FM detected audio route into the audio input stage via the RED LINE routes on 2 of the switches.

ALSO I have placed the FM tuner in the left bottom corner . . . . do note that there is the YELLOW lever and its cantilevering at the RED fulcrum circle, and one might expect RF switching action at the left side of that lever.

Electrolytic wise . . . looks like 3 units on the PS and one cathode bypassing cap at the AF stage cathode and then there is the all important
2 Mfd summing capacitor in the FM detector circuit.

This set also might be prone to mechanical problems with the FM tuner wherein the tuning knob ends up not actually mechanically moving the FM tuning elements .

If you find that is mechanicallly engaging properly, then you night check in the middle of the systems FM loop at the "limiter " . . . (HA . . dream on) . . . at pin #2 of the EAF801, to then see that a negative voltage appears and increases as tuning is done across the FM band.
Greater generated negative voltage . . . the stronger the stations signal.

If you are not also hearing the audio of the station, then there must be a problem between the detector stage and the AF amp stages.
I see that the audio section is PCB constructed, so be sure that there are no cold solder . . floating ring joints . . . on any of its mounted circiutry.

Thanks be to Sir Dennis for CC'ing me the 'Cherman version of the 98 Schematic, otherwise it would be over the week end before accessing my archived Samuels version out at the mule barn.

Edd - thanks for the excellent analysis, commentary and schematic mark up. Will get to this unit soon.

Update. Grundig is fixed. Turned out to be a weak spring on the FM push button switch and had to lube up the switch arm a smidge. All is well.....or as Edd pointed out as well as it can get with this 3 tube unit. Nice piece of engineering though.
Thanks for the help!
