Signal Generator

The Eico 324 SG that I have is putting out a weak signal. If the 2 tubes of the 324 are good, is selenium rectifier the likely problem area? Or does a selenium weaken or just 100% go out?

Seleniums can often get weak with age, or become leaky.

Check other areas, too, like bad electrolytics, drifted resistors, dirty switches, etc.

Thanks gentlemen. The 324 was recapped and resistors changed out last year. It is a back up unit so don't use it often. I got to fiddling with it this morning and after reading your posts, went back and cleaned a gunked up rotary switch. Don't know why I didn't do that when I last had it opened up?? Anyway we got improved performance now!

I think that mine is a 324. If it does use a selenium, I definitely haven't replaced it yet. Had to replace the electrolytics. The tubes don't draw much current, so the rectifier would have to be very weak to affect operation, though if you suspect fault, always check for reverse current, as that can damage electrolytics. I had a phonograph once that had persistent hum even after a 'lytic change. Turned out that the rectifier was leaky. Happens on occasion. A swap with a similar unit we had in stock cured the problem.

....Maybe I should check my switch, too. It's intermittent in operation, but I've been too lazy to fix it. Sometimes the output can be very weak.

Buy Heathkit.
Why? The manuals are available, they're usually pretty cheap, and the stuff was made for goobers to build. Almost all of my bench equipment is Heathkit. Even the items I've had to fix were easy and worth it.
Just my 2 cents.

EICO is nice. Heath is nice, too, but EICO is definitely nice.
