GE H-31/ Radiola 80 capacitors
3/22/2010 8:02:00 PMBrett
I have a GE H-31 aka Radiola 80. Looking at the capacitor pack (2mfd, 3mfd, 3mfd & .05mfd), am I right in assuming the 2 and the 3’s are electrolytic and the .05 is not and that the common connections are negative?
Thanks, Brett

In the earely days of radio electrolytic caps weren't common. Radio manufacturers used fairly large value paper type for power supply filters. You can use modern electrolytic caps to replace originals but won't find those low values. 4.7 and 10 mf @ 450 volts are available.

Modern mylar and similar caps are also available with values like 2 and 3 mf. These will cost more than electrolytic but should last just about forever.

Norm,
Thanks for the info. That’s what I get for assuming. I just figured they were electrolytic and the polarity wasn’t marked. There’s a place local that has the 2uf film caps but for the 3’s I’ll have to go with a 2.7uf or a 5uf which is out of tolerance unless I order something online. He also has some 2.2uf 350v electrolytic but then jumps to 8.7uf. Would the 2.7uf be better or the larger 5uf’s? Or do I need to order 3uf’s? Thanks I know I’m rambling.

Use the larger if they aren't too big. Higher values filter out hum better.
