Canadian Marconi 88A and bias cell

Working on a Canadian Marconi 1936-37 model 88A battery set and encountered my fist bias cell. I take it the cell would be polarized if working? Can I replace with a small battery? What negative voltage would I be looking for?

Here is the circuit:

You can use a 1 1/2 volt battery. No current is being drawn as it only biases the AVC line. The radio will work without thi battery but be sure to short across the connections. Don't leave the circuit open.
