Trav-ler Model 5008 (1946)

I have a Trav-ler Model 5008 with a bad speaker. The field coil and speaker cone were punctured when I got the radio. The schematic (Rider's) shows a P.M. speaker; I assume this means "permanent magnet."

I found a matching size (4") speaker in my spare parts that should fit perfectly. It is rated at 16 Ohms. In this radio, the speaker supports the slide-rule dial.

My question is, can I replace the original speaker with the 16 Ohm speaker directly? Or, would I need to put a high wattage resistor in series with the new speaker so it doesn't get too much power and blow?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Mark

Are you sure the original had a field coil? A P.M. speaker doesn't have a field.

You could use a speaker with 16 ohm voice coil. Max volume out of the radio will be slightly reduced. Adding a resistor will just make it worse. Try the 16 ohm speaker before mounting it in your radio. You should find it acceptable.

I should have written "voice coil" instead of "field coil".
