:A 2 inch speaker is going to sound like a transistor radio. It would be better to replace the field coil with a resistor. Use a new 4 inch PM speaker.
:
Too bad you can't soak the epoxy with acetone, but I don't think that acetone would work, and it'd take the enamel off of the windings.
You could also make a new voice coil. It's probably about 40 gauge wire.

:I have a 2 inch one. It sounds great, and I know where to get about 20 more, but they have big ceramic magnets.

:T,
: I'm still pretty sure that there are very thin speakers with "rare earth" magnets that also sound good. But they only handle 2 Watts, which is exactly what I need.

:Dave,
:I have several rare earth magnets from hard drives, if you want to experiment. They're glued to a backing plate, but at least one was removed. They're half-moon shape, but cut to 1/2 that size (radially) About 1/8" thick. They resemble an arc of a circle with inner to outer diameter of 1/2", and 1 1/2" longest dim. across the outer arc. Good luck.

:If you can't get a sample, any old answering machine or small digital clock radio will probably do.
