mail order radio schools

After WW2 my dad took a radio class by mail. I remember reading the lessens he had when I was a boy. I would like to find out what company published the classes. Does anyone remember any mail order schools from back then?

A lot of those ads were in Popular Mechanics. I do remember seeing all kinds of ads for learning at home. Try and look here.

Maybe find what you are looking for.

Tom,
I know of at least 2. Coyne and DeForests, both of which I believe were based in Ill. My brother was a graduate of DeForests. A close friend used the Coyne school, but never finished. I have a really old VOM with the Deforests logo/name on the front panel.

CIE (Cleveland Institute of Electronics) was a very popular one. They had lots of ads in the various electronic hobby magazines. They were probably more geared to those seeking a FCC 1st or 2nd class radiotelephone license.

I took the appliance repair course from NRI in DC. Also studied, not finished, the Communications course and radio-tv repair. My barber has the National Radio Institute dipolma on his wall

Part of one of the older NRI courses is on this site under "Tips and Training".

Thanks for all the information. The Cleveland Institute of Electronics is still in business. According to Wikipedia National Radio Institute went out of business in 2002.

Tom,
And I think the DeForest became Devry, and is now a fully accredited Univ.
