old phone
2/14/2010 12:40:30 AMMarv Nuce(84081:0)
Just inherited an old wall mount crank phone. Still has the ringer coils and lever switches with ear piece, but otherwise empty. Outside looks original, heavy hardwood case. No markings except KELLOG on the swivel mouth piece. Should I restore with original parts or convert to a wall mount CD player with a crank to make selections, and a wall wart?

CD player? How would you listen? Through the receiver? You should just hook it up and use it as a phone.

:Wall mount CD player? How about a tampon dispenser?
You can probably get a schematic through Telephone Collectors International.

I'll just ponder on it for a while. Since it has no guts, maybe just build a fake crank, hang it on the wall for looks, or maybe a piggy bank for my grandson.

I collect and restore old phones-
You can see some here-
(If this link works)

A lot of people take the guts out of a working phone and use the receiver(earpiece), and transmitter, (mouthpiece), of the wall phone to make an interesting extension phone. It's not that hard. You can make it so the front swings open, make a neat box next to it, or cut a hole in the side for the dial or touch tone pad. If you still have the generator a fun thing is to have a friend touch the terminals while you turn the crank. You can eliminate cranky inlaws this way too. It also works for "shock" fishing. There are a lot of things, but I don't think a CD player is one of them.
Hope this helps.

Marv For this phone to work, you also need a network coil. They look a little like a iron core inductor.

Think I'll put it on the back burner until I research the Tampon dispenser idea lol. Not being a regular user, have no idea what the unit price should be, or available sizes to be offered.lol

:Lewis, I've got a payphone that a guy wants to hook up as an extension. The transmitter has low output, but everything else looks good and he has another handset. He doesn't want the coin mech to work, but the network, dial, hook switch all look good. I just need to hook it all up. I have some good pics and could use some help.

Hi Lewis-
Well- it's beginning to look like I'm beating a dead horse here. Unless you know a link I couldn't find, they only give that information to members, at $25 per membership. All of the phones in my collection are pre-dial, so are local battery only. My copy of "Old Time Telephones-Design, history and Restoration" has some nice diagrams, but nothing that uses these terminal designations. I guess I'll just continue with the "try clip lead here" experiments. Thanks anyway for your time and effort.

:Google "TCI technical library" and you should find quite a few free schematics of telephoones. E-mail me, and I will show you how to buy what you need and connect it.

Ok Lewis, I hope you're still checking this out. You would not BELIEVE the medical stuff I've dealt with this past week-
ANYWAY- I finally downloaded the schematic for my model 233G. Remember that I don't want the coin mech. hooked up at all, just an extension phone.
Here are some pics.

Sorry, but I haven't figured out how to extract the email address, so let me know so I can contact you directly.
Thanks,
Terry

::::::::::::Think I'll put it on the back burner until I research the Tampon dispenser idea lol. Not being a regular user, have no idea what the unit price should be, or available sizes to be offered.lol

::::::::::::::Just inherited an old wall mount crank phone.

:::::::::::::Marv For this phone to work, you also need a network coil. They look a little like a iron core inductor.

:::::::::::It is fairly simple to modify an old phoone to work on a new (common battery) line. I know a site where you can get the parts for ten bucks or less, I have built a couple of phones. Be happy to advise.

::::::::::Lewis, I've got a payphone that a guy wants to hook up as an extension. The transmitter has low output, but everything else looks good and he has another handset. He doesn't want the coin mech to work, but the network, dial, hook switch all look good. I just need to hook it all up. I have some good pics and could use some help.

:::::::::It has been a long time since I worked on a pay phone (coin box in ma bell speak). I'll see if I can get a schematic, and get backk to you.

:::::::As I saaid earlier, I know a place that sells old phone guts
CHEAP:::::::Lewis
:::::::
::::::Right- but I've got ALL the guts, including the network, just all of the wires are missing. Does this site have hookup charts? I don't want to buy parts I already have.
::::::Thanks, Terry

:::::For hook ups and schematic of old phones, go to Telephone Collectors International. AThere are dozens of drawings there.

::::Hi Lewis-
::::Well- it's beginning to look like I'm beating a dead horse here.

Just click on my name where it says "posted by" or use "linsonl@bellsouth.net"
Your phone will be pretty simple to rewire as an extention. The network is an IND101A which is a simmpler circuit than the later ones.
