:How do I test this bulb . It is a voltage regulator in my 1950's Navy RTTY converter (CV-89). I'm unsure of its condition . I'd like to be sure before I buy a new one even though it's not expensive and I'll troubleshoot from there. I have heard 110 volts AC with a resistor. Many thanks and happy new year !

:Andrew, here's aLamp Data Site.

:Handy data. Use your variac and hook/touch power cord to lamp. Turn up voltage until neon starts to glow both sides. For me that's good. You don't need to supply total voltage as chart indicates.

Your 991 will most likely be good but you can test it with a power supply, resistor and meter. Add a resistor in series with your 991. Connect the lamp/resistor across a power supply. The resistor value should be selected to give around 2 ma through the 991.
Measure voltage across the lamp. If good it should be between 48 and 67 volts.
