Unusual Sparton console model 1476
1/9/2010 4:18:39 PMRon
I just found a Sparton console model 1476. I usually prefer table radios but this console is different than most. I haven't found out much about it yet but I believe its from 1935. This radio has 3 speakers; a large center speaker and 2 small ones aimed diagonally. There is a tuning eye and I think 4 bands. It has 2 chassis on separate shelves and a total of 15 tubes with the tuning eye. The dial hides behind 2 hinged doors and instead of just speaker cloth it has horizontal gold bars in 3 sections for the 3 speakers. I got it at an estate sale and they had it playing when I got there. It actually sounds better than any of my other old tube radios. I'll soon put new caps in it but the sound is surprising and the tuning eye works well also. There is a small indicator light by the bandswitch and when you change bands the light changes colors from clear to red and also green or blue. The cabinet is not perfect with several scratches but its still quite attractive. Also the whole back of the radio is covered by a removable clipped on wood-framed screen with holes for wires power and antenna wires. The round dial is perfect and has 2 halves of the globe pictured in the center. Do any of you guys have one of these Spartons or maybe know anything about them? Google search doesn't help much. I'd like to know the selling price or any other info. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Ron,
Had you said Zenith, the description would come close to fitting a Stratosphere. I suspect that the Sparton you describe was Sparton's answer to the top of the line Zeniths.
I think what you have is rare find. Congradulations. Looking for informaiton on it will be a treat I am sure.

Best Regards,

Bill Grimm

I think you just got the best deal of the new year!!!!

I love spartons, they are great radios, and the cabinets are very well designed.
I have 18 spartons, and wish that I could find something like that, for that $$.

You may have found the info you're looking for by now but you really made a fabulous deal! The 1476 was one of the original 4 Walter Teague designs unveiled by Sparton in September of 1935. Built around the 1166 chassis (11 tubes in the chassis) with an added three tube amplifier and three speakers, it is impressive. A Sparton catalog reprint that is circulating has it incorrectly labeled as the Nocturne but it is actually the 1476 Deluxe Triolian. I have a brochure from 1936 which describes it nicely. The gold trim is actual gold plating. Not many were sold due to a very high price. Not as valuable as a Nocturne but nearly as rare with the Teague pedigree. Nice pickup!
