What Is A "BIS"?
1/7/2010 11:01:25 PMJohnny(83032:0)
I'm working on a Grunow 1151 with a 11A chassis. I've determined that I have an open "C & D BIS. PRI." coil. The C & D refer to bandswitch positions and the PRI. is primary but what is the "BIS"? I'm pretty sure the schematic says BIS.

Johhny,
I see there is a bi-selector transformer in the parts list:

:My Brunswick has a bi-selector transformer. It switches between a primary input of 105VAC and 120VAC. Apparently this was a problem in an era when voltages, and cycles, varied widely in different parts of the country. My schematic shows it as a tap on the primary. The colors are-Black/ Red-Black/ and Black with a red tracer. The two with the lowest impedance would be the common and tap. I hope this helps. Either that or you have a trans-gendered transformer. Good luck with that!

Johnny,
Thats the "Left Coast" airport in San Francisco, and maybe a good spot to look for a trans-gendered transformer, although airplanes and fog are their major offering.

Recently restored a grunow and the parts listing is kind of deceiving. The transformer referred to is a "coil" with dual purpose in that it has windings for BC and SW signal. (at least it did on my 752) You may want to consider rewinding as replacements are difficult to find.

:Yes Scott it looks like rewinding this one is the most viable option. I've never done one before. If I remove each coil winding and count the number of turns on it and then redo it with new wire of the same gauge and put the same number of wraps on it I should have a working coil. Just not sure where to get this kind of wire. It must be at least 30-36 gauge. Any ideas on this? And what would I coat the windings with? Wax?
Johnny
1/11/2010 9:19:54 PMScott(83216:83130)
Well here is what worked for my rewind. I dismantled an old adapter and after unwinding on a spool, used the wire which was approximate gauge. The wire was coated so a wax coating is not necessary however in my case there were multiple windings and I separated them with an old photograph negative cut to size and hotglued at overlapping ends (careful not to make a lumpy joint). If you search Grunow Oscillating coil on this forum you can read my trials from August posting. Good Luck...rewinding is not that bad!
