Rca c15-3 caps
12/30/2009 4:44:38 PMIan
Hi all, happy holidays.
i just finished recapping a c15-3 , it works but the sound is garbled, and the low frequency audio is very distorted. There are two caps potted in tar with two resistors. I replaced one cap and resistor, and left the other in place. (it didnt read as shorted) I will replace it in a little while. The other cap I have a question is IN the output transformer. Yes it is in it. There is a third winding of the output transformer which goes to a cap, only to a cap. It is packed in tar with the rest of the transformer. Should I replace this? or leave it be? Any ideas about replaceing it without destroying the xformer?
Thanks
IAn

Hi Ian,
If it were in the chassis it would be gone in a heart beat. It could quite easily be the source of your audio problems.

I don't have experience roasting transformers. One thing you may try is getting another transformer and a new capacitor. This web site http://www.radioremembered.org/outimp.htm may give you an idea of the transformer that would work. You may have one in a parts set.

:If you don't mind the work, dig one end out and clip it.The high end will magically return enabling some very pleasant listening.Did it to a C-13-2 i had awhile back. It's .07mfd. if i remember.Another option would just dig a little extra so you can splice some leads on to the ends and connect a simple SPST so you can see the diff. Charlie N2VUW

:Not to be a wet blanket at the party or any thing.my set arrived with poor audio too.A driver trans showed an open on 1/2 the secondary.I replaced it with the unit that AES sells.I beleive it is a replica of the older stancor 53.Its specs were not even close but it worked.I just couldn't stand to have the thing dead.I converted it from P-P to SE drive with good results.Be sure to get basic and check everything.tubes, connections ,everything.I once spent hours on a terribly noisy intermittent Scott.Got so pi**ed off i threw a pair of needle nose at it and broke a 6K7 I.F.!Realising i was an ass for doing that i replaced the tube and you all can guess the rest of the story.Mystery noise gone.Charlie N2VUW
