Brunswick S-31 Radio/Phonograph

Hello,
I have a Brunswick S-31 from the late 20s that I'm restoring. I need to replace the caps and resistors but I don't know what the replacements are. I have the schematics and labeled photos that I can send by email. I need someone who can tell me part by part what the replacement is.

Thanks.

Hello Oscar

The schematics and other information are also here on Nostalgia Air Resources site http://www.nostalgiaair.org/Resources/529/M0039529.htm

Often capacitors are marked with the value example:
.1mF (or MF) 200V or 0.1 Microfarads with a voltage rating of 200 Volts. You will also see some like this example 2.5mmF (note 2 m's that is the old way now called microfarads or pF)@ 600V. Picofarads are 1/1000 of a Microfarad. So, 100pF = 0.0001mF.

If they are not marked the schematic will be the guide to identifying them. However, some of the capacitors are shown in their physical location on page two of NA resources schematics.

There are several types of capacitors made from different materials. So you may need help with the Voltage and Type of capacitor for your Radio.

The resistor Ohm values are also shown. The resistor color code information is also available on this site. It looks like some of the resistors are the old “dog bone shape”. Newer resistors are banded with the same colors and the code is read from the first band. Dogbone readings are shown here: http://www.nostalgiaair.org/References/rmacodes/reschart.htm

Here is what you need to do. Start a list of all capacitor and resistor values and the quantities from the schematic. Fill in only what you can see on the schematic. Others will help you with the rest of the information.

Example
Value Quantity Voltage? Type?
0.1 mF 4 200 Tubular Paper
0.002 mF 1 400 Tubular Paper
2.5mmF (pF) 3 600 Mica
5mF 2 250 Elecrolytic
Note: mF or uF are the same thing = Microfarads.

Ohms Quantity Watts Type
20K 1 5 Power, Wire wound

Resistors if not shown like this 20000 they may be marked with 20M which was x 1,000. Now we use K = x 1,000. 10K = 10,000 Ohms and Megaohms(million)are M.

Leave room for more information that will be added to the right of each item. Then ask for the information you do not have. I am sure you will get help.

Jeff
