Repairing ferrite rod
12/12/2009 7:44:45 AMMark
I have a broken ferrite rod. This is a clean break. I am looking for repair suggestions. I was told I could use the product JB Weld because it's a strong bond and the product contains metal.

Your thoughts

Thanks!!
Mark

Here's a fix I recently used on a rod that was broken into several pieces. It works fine now.

Dennis

Try to apply the epoxy only on the peripheral surfaces of the rod......not "in between" each joint. Simply butt all pieces together snugly then apply the epoxy with a toothpick......don't use too much epoxy.

Forgot to mention.....JB Weld (The 5 minute type) would work just as well as any good epoxy. As a matter of fact, JB Weld is my preferred adhesive to use around the shop. Good Stuff. I don't use the "overnight" type of JB because it seems to take forever to cure.

Dennis,

Fantastic job!

I suppose you could use a conductive adhesive at the joints. The heatshrink is a good idea, it not only adds some strength to the repair it also cleans it up. Looks great!

Thanks guys! Great repair job!!
One other question regarding the wire winding.
Does it matter how the wire is arranged on the rod?
The wires on my rod are not tightly wound as they were before the rod snapped. The wire is not broken.

Not critical that the coils be "tight". Just secure them with tiny dabs of cement so they remain in place on the rod and don't stress the fine wires.
