Hallicrafters S-77

I took this thing apart this summer, recapped, did some cosmetic re-work, and then had a mess of medical roblemms, both me and the wife, but this week I finally got my act together and put it together again. I don't know how they strung the dial courd at the factory, but I used some language my mother would not have approved several times. Anyway, I fired it up tonight, and the thing gets a station just about anywhere on the dial and all bands you put it. Now, if they would only broadcast in English more, I might know to whom I am listening.

I miss the BBC on shortwave, but being on the internet must save them lots of money.
Some of the english-speaking broadcasts, when they aren't on a political rant are quite interesting to listen to. Many countries still like Americans, but maybe are wary of our government.
Radio Havana and WBCQ have installments on old radios and propagation/reception tips.
Glad you got the old Hallicrafter's going. Was this the S-77A? I saw the manuals for the S-77 on BAMA and the dial stringing was included. Some of these are a real 'cat's cradle'. Are you using a long-wire antenna?
Glad also to hear that you and the wife's health concerns have stabilized.

Hey, everyone:
Somethime in my past with Delta, "they" decided that we needed a certain tie cord. This stuff is black nylon, very much coarser than fishing line, and works GREAT as dial cork. As I was issued a large spool (~ 250 feet) and never knew what to do with it, it came home with me in my tool tray when I retired. It worked great on my S77A, and I have more than I will ever know what to do with. Need dial cord? I will mail you reasonable quantities for free, just to see such a wonderful cord not go to waste when i die.

You have my e-mail and I am here. let me know if I can help.

Lewis: here's a handy site to see what's being broadcast in english to North America: http://www.primetimeshortwave.com/
You can sort the broadcast schedule any way you want (by time, country, etc).

You know, it is a lot more fun finding a station halfway around the world than listeneing to it on the internet. When it is coming in on my own half axxed antenna, I feel more like I accomplished something than when it comes in on my telephone line via DSL.
Tnx again
