I recapped mine, and the sensitivity does not seem the best, and seems to sound overloaded & clipped on strong fm signals..

Bad electro filter capacitors will ordinarily cause a/c hum that is NOT variable with the volume control. Would suggest you replace all paper/wax caps, check tubes and voltages, and also confirm the hum is not coming from an external source.
