I have a bunch of 4 & 5 pin tubes that I do not need my radios. I dont know how to test as i only have a 7,8,9 pin tester How do I test these.

Mme Lisa . . . . .

" I have a bunch of 4 & 5 pin tubes that I do not need (for) my radios."

How's about a list of all of those tubes, as they would typically be a rectifier, triode or tetrode, with that small of a pin count.

With them then identified. a possibility of the "haywiring" of a sacrificial octal socket from a defunt tube to a 4 pin /and/or/
5 pin socket to make an adapter . Thus making the possibity, in some cases, of testing the tube as it's equivalent in an octal tube format.

Then if several duplicate tube numbers are had, make a testing run to see the commonality of their emisson or transconductance specs.

Thus, sorting out good---weak---bad units.

:Lisa, u can at least test 4 pin tubes to see if "blown" Just touch leads of ur ohmeter to the 2 larger pins [1 & 4 ]. If reading, filament in tube is not blown. Five pins tubes can be tested same way but hard to tell u which pins to touch . Hey, just because filaments good, tube could still be "bad"

As an example:

I have a questionable 6ss7 tube here in a Farnsworth 6-tube radio that uses two of these tubes. One as the RF amp and the other as an IF amp.

As the IF amp stage this one particular tube caused trouble so I pulled it to test it.

Two tube testers that I have here BOTH show the tube to be good.

Yet if I place this tube in the radio as the IF amplifier tube the radio behaves badly causing distorted warble-like reception.

If however... instead I use it as the RF amplifier stage.. it works perfectly and very solid!...

So go figure.
