Power supply for battery sets
11/8/2009 9:32:50 PMBob B
I would like to build 2 or 3 solid state power supplies to power battery sets, typically 5 or 6 tube 01A' or 199 tubes.

If anyone can point me to a diagram source with component values it would be appreciated. I have one of those ARBE power supplies for bench use but would like to build individual supplies that can be left in a radio.

Thanks

Try looking here for AES schematic.....

Thanks JGJ and Terry. I tried AES Search and came up blank. I will phone them.

Sir Bob . . . . .

Its sort of well . . . .hidden out . . . .

(But I personally, would still be building my own from scratch)

Onward. . . to more info on specs . . .

I fear if I were to try building from scratch I would find myself in ept, deep ept. I have ordered one of those suckers from AES. Perhaps I can build a couple copies from it.

It's an ugly thing. I certainly can improve on that.

Edd,

In the absence of a power supply (which I intend to procure/build), where does one start, in the meantime, troubleshooting a battery powered radio such as a Philco 42-122 which I recently inherited?

As always, thank you for your valuable help.

I'm not Edd - but I'll offer my $0.02. You could test the tubes with a tube tester, check the values on the resistors and pots with a meter (replace if necesary), replace the necessary caps, check coils with a meter, check solder joints and switches, etc., etc., etc.... BUT - without a power supply - what's the purpose??? - it ain't gonna play!!! I have generally found it much easier to work on a radio with a viable power supply - not only to check voltages at different points - but also to test the radio after each component change to make sure I haven't screwed up somewhere along the line. If you've made a dozen 'corrections' without a power supply and one of them was wrong - you've multiplied the difficulty of the final repair exponentially..... Bottom line - get a power supply BEFORE you start mucking around in the radio....

Hi Bob

I can email you some general information on building such a supply, need email address. Not hard to build from mostly junk box parts. I do suggest using a LM317 voltage regulator for the filament supply.

Hi Norm, I received the email, thank you, looks simple enough and I have most of the parts. Thanks again, Paul
