Dial indicator decals
11/8/2009 4:38:06 PMFred
Have a wooden radio case that needs to be refinished. The dial indicator is a decal. There are no replacements available for this radio. I know the decal cannot be disturbed, but the area around it is all scratched and flaking. Has anyone had experience with this problem?

If it's flat maybe you can scan it, and make a new one after cleaning it up and improving it with Photoshop or other imaging software.

Fred,
You can find clear (unprinted) waterslide decal material on the web. Comes in std size sheets, for PC printers. I use MS Visio and Adobe PS to make decals for dials or other needs, but the application used is your choice.

HERE IS A TIP

The substrate mat'l used for preprinted decals from most vendors is very thin, and will practically disappear when overcoated with a clear finish. I've found the waterslide sheets available on the web seems much thicker, and consequently don't dissappear into the finish. A line of demarcation will be obvious at the decals edge. Typically a decal is overcoated with a clear finish, but if the placement of the decal is on a highly reflective surface, the line of demarcation may be objectionable. I've used waterslide decal materials from 2 different mfrs, and both are too thick for a really finished look.
