A Bad day in the shop.
10/28/2009 10:23:54 PMRobert
I was working on a Zenith 10-153 with the chassis on the bench and having the speaker on the side doing a final check out after a total recap job. The loud speaker is pristine condition and it happened. I moved the clamp lamp for a better final look and I pulled a jar of wood putty right into the speaker. What a hole to repair. Closed up the shop and wanted to get sick.

I know that it's not much solace, but take heart, it has happened, or will happen, to each of us. Matter of fact, I have gone round 2 or 3 times with nasty episodes in the shop.

You'll most likely not make THAT mistake again.

:To top off the evening,I did not discharge the filter caps on a transmitter and blew up my new digital capacitor meter. What a day.

Mr Baaaaaad day at black rock. . . . .

Reference . . . one each digital capacitance meter . . .which now might be stuck / flashing on 0000 or 8888.

You might check across the input terminals to see if they put a pair of back to back polarized power
diodes across the input to crunch down and save the frontal electronics.

(Their presence is transparent on higher capacitance readings, but on the low capacitance ranges
the u/p algorithm dithers the zero referencing by deleting their stray junction capacitance to
compensate for them being in circuit.)

Sooo, just see if you now are finding a dead short across the input terminals.

Hi Robert,
I am sorry that happened to you. Sometimes a really nasty cone break can be repaired and the speaker will sound great.
Also, on a radio that age I have found that the spider goes out and sound quality is degraded. Your speaker may have been near to needing reconing anyway.

I have often wondered what the world record would be for keeping a radio on the bench without poking a hole in its speaker. I know I wouldn't have it.

Best Regards,

Bill

I have just finished the cabinet ( Silvertone 1017 ) was sitting on the garage floor. My Daughter ran over it. With her Suburban 2500.

Picking up black paint when you meant contact cleaner will give you a case of the jaws, too.

::From Jim L. Now one of my bad days was when I had the A voltage too high and blew 4 tubes in a Philco farm set. Some of those tubes seem a little scarce
