Hoffman TV - almost there

Tuner suggestions worked, thenks Don, no longer need to fine tune on every channel. All caps have been replaced. Picture looks like one of those old kinescopes (cool!!) - picture squishes somewhat on bottom and sides but I'm assuming this is standard for a 1950 set....but still have few quirks before I zip 'er back up....

1. Have a minor problem with 5 or 6 faint, stationary single white lines, slanted bout 20 degrees, spaced appx evenly on the screen, if the brightness is set relatively high and contrast is set relatively low. Not a big deal as i can adjust the screen down to a point that they go away. Had this exact problem BEFORE the recap but has not gone away. Could be weak tube? if so in what section?

2. Several labels on back are missing. Figured out what the finger-adjust pots are I think but schems show a adj. coil called 'horiz freq'. What does this do??

3. schems show a 'horiz lin adj' with 3 different positions on it?? Can't figure out where that adjustment is or what it is for either.

Hi Mark

The lines you see are Vertical Retrace. Later TV's had blanking circuits to eliminate these lines. Earlier TV's didn't so brightness will need to be kept down.

Horiz Freq adjusts the horizontal oscillator in your TV. If it isn't set correctly the picture will break into diagonal lines.

Set the Horizontal Linearity switch to the position which gives the least distorted picture.

Picture squishes somewhat on the botton is caused by the vertical section of your TV, Vertical Size and Linearity controls will have an effect on this. There may be positioning magnets on the back of your picture tube to move it down.

Finally out that i had to make VERY tiny adjustments on the linearity to get everything "unsquished" correctly top to bottom, also adjusted the magnet to lower the picture a bit, looks fine now, also thanks to Don for solving my goof with one of the fine tuning slugs. Nice to know the retrace lines are normal, boy this baby IS old if that is normal!! Now I can start refinishing the cabinet...thanks to all....Mark
