Filter Caps on a Zenith 5R-216
10/2/2009 6:30:33 PMGeorge Frame
This is my second Zenith 5R-216 I have worked on. The schematic calls for two filter caps: C9,8uF and C10, 10uF. The original caps in both of these radios are C9,16uF and C10,20uF. Did Zenith publish something that shifted these values higher in production. ?

Hi George,
Are you sure these are not replacements?

Hi Bill, They both appear to be original. Aluminum cans with paper sleeves over them, looks like original wiring. It just seems odd that both radios have exactly the same larger value filter caps.

Hi George

There could have been an early factory revision to eliminate hum. Exact values aren't critical but larger capacity filters hum better. I would use 22 mf @ 450 volts for each cap if being replaced.

This schematic has 8 and 14 mf.
