soldered cans for potted components ??

Hello all! Is it true that some of the component cans for potted chokes ,caps etc. are soldered shut and if so can they be opened by running a torch along the seam until solder melts and pulling lid off ??I don't want to use hack saw or rotary tool, besides how would you re-attach the lid after anyways? I have aquired a Westighouse Columnair amplifier power supply chassis from grandfather clock radio(from ebay) and it appears to have these soldered component cans.

What you can do is remove componet and use a small blow torch to unsolder joints.
