Cleaning Volume Controls
9/18/2009 5:48:46 PMDon Hain
Hello, I've only been working on my old radios for about a year now. I have taken volume controls apart and with a Q-tip cleaned the carbon and the contacts. Most of them worked out OK, but should there be any kind of lube on it? Thank You for any help, Don H.

Depends on what type of volume control you have. I usually clean VERT well with just plain old rubbing alcohol. The alcohol is a degreaser and dries quickly. Then...I usually use a VERY small ammount of grease on shaft and other moving parts but NOT where there is an electrical connection contact. If it is the type where it has VERY tiny piece of wood or fiber board that moves on top of a metal strip...I use a tooth pick to apply a VERY small amount of grease NOT OIL ...like they did at the factory. You do not want to get grease or oil on the carbon strip...
