Zenith 8H032 completed

Hi All,
I thought you may want to see this one. It is a rare Zenith 8H032, one of the first radios made that could receive modern FM.
It came from Cambridge Maryland. It worked intermittantly. The main problems were cosmetic. All of the finish had been stripped off, it had veneer damage and the grill cloth was horrid beyond description.
I repaired, refinished with lacquer and gave it a red felt grill cloth and a Zenith crown.

The electronics were a reoutine recapping and 6S8GT tube replacement except for one odd problem. FM worked when the chassis was in the case but not when it was out of the case. I found a bad connection in the descriminator IF.

I have it on eBay eventhough my wife even says I should keep it.

Best Regards,

Bill Grimm

Hi Bill,
This had damage to the brass. Polishing didn't produce good results, so I electroplated it. I was happy with the outcome.
Electroplating supplies are available at AES. Beware, it has arsenic in it.

Best Regards,

Bill

Bill , Thanks for the infomation. I never would have guessed that type of stuff was available. But I could tell from the photos it was not just spray painted.Did not know plating could be done like that. So I am glad I asked. I have to give it try now. With out the trim on this radio there is not much detail to it. It may do this radio justice after all! Thanks again for the tip !!!

:Great job Bill! You've given me incentive to restore mine (I have the same model) but it needs serious work. All the wires going to the pushbuttons have to be replaced and there are veneer isues. A good winter project?

Hi Nick,
Perhaps an all winter project. These are susceptable to Silver Mica Disease.
I hope you have a ventalated area for the refinishing. If not you can gas yourself doing it inside.

Best Regards,

Bill
