Hallicrafters S38-C

I just purchased one of these at a garage sale. It seems to work (and work well) on the AM broadcast band only. I do not have a manual, and I am not sure that I have the antenna connected correctly. I have only a 6-foot long wire on the terminal on the left (looking at the back). The center post and the right post are strapped together. On the 3 bands from 1.6 to 30 MHz, nothing comes in but static and occasional whistling - both with AM or CW switch positions. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

You can download the manual with good schematic for an S-38C from this site. You do have the connections correct for a long wire. You will need more than 6 feet though. 15 to 20 feet and outside is better. Clean the rotary switch, give it some exercise by rotation a bunch of times. dirty tube sockets, remove the tubes and clean pins and sockets. You should recap it. Remember that the S-38C has the B- buss line, Not chassis ground like the S-38B & A Here is a good link with tips for S-38 line
