1.5 volt A battery for 2 volt filament
9/6/2009 11:44:20 AMChris
I have a farm battery radio that requires 2 volts for the filaments of tubes. Is it okay to use 1.5 volt batteries or is this too low or cause cathode stripping etc. If not I could put to 1.5 batteries in series with resistor to bring down to 2 volts.

Hi Chris

Although 2 volt tubes can operate on 1 1/2 volts in audio circuits the radio oscillator most likely will not. Use 2 - 1 1/2 volt batteries in series for your two volt tubes. May need a few ohms in series to drop voltage if there isn't enough drop in the wiring?

If you were to use two Nickel Cadmium Cells, those are only 1.2 volts each. Would = 2.4 volts. That should be fine for filaments. Not mention rechargeable.
