6 volt radio in 8 volt system
8/30/2009 10:10:01 PMRalph Schneider
I have fixed up a old 6 volt radio to install in a old car, I have not installed it, as I am worried because the guy has put in a 8 volt battery, he said they adjusted up the regulator to charge it. I am reluctant to put that much voltage on those old tubes. is there any way to drop the voltage down to 6 volts?

Ralph,
What should have been done was use a 12/6 battery. This is a 12 volt battery with a 6 volt tap for the radio. Then it could have been upgraded to a 12 volt system. There are resistors to sort of kind of reduce the voltage from 8 to 6 but they don't work as well. Let me see if I can find the 12/6 battery for you.
Yes, here's the website:

Yes, they do have the resistor. But the 12/6 battery works much much better. I have never ordered anything from this place because I don't have a car. I do restore the radios and recommend the battery.

I hope that this helps,

Dave
