This set will have two 45s in push-pull, the most expensive tubes in the set. Try to verify that their filaments are good - take an ohmmeter and check for continuity across the two large pins. If either is bad, you'll pay at least $50 each for used ones, maybe more.

The power supply may or may not be OK as is. Otherwise, you'll probably need to replace the filter caps, which is a chore, but there are shortcuts. The 40K and 65K voltage divider resistors in the power supply, if they are the tubular glass variety, should be replaced. The audio xfmr between the 1st and 2nd audio stages may be open, but a replacement is available from either RadioDaze or AES for about $12.

Thanks for the information. I did send an E-Mail to the seller. So far no reply. I looked up the model 55C, there is an Early & Late production. I will check it out as best as I can, but it's one old radio hard to resist. I'll post again if it's really the prize it looks like it is.

Not much difference between early and late models. Best to use Leigh's modern drawing rather than the schematic here on Nostalgiaair: http://www.atwaterkent.info/TechData/Drawings/Images/AK14902sch.pdf

There are some subs available for 45's a lot less ($20) complete with adaptors. See: http://www.dialcover.com/tubes.html
Haven't tried any of them though. Glad I did my AK 55C some years ago when 45's were a lot cheaper. Antique Radio Supply wants $88 for NOS one now! Yikes! I need a stimulus bailout for my hobby!

45s, with their directly heated cathode, are considered the cat's meow by some audiophiles. I'm unsure what a DHT's advantages are, aucoustically. Whatever the advantages, they will be totally lost on the performance of an 80-year-old TRF receiving only AM.

What he could do is sell the 45s on eBay, and stick in the modern substitutes ;>)

I have a number of radios with 45s. I ought to remove them and put them in my safe deposit box.

Got a call from the old gent that owns it, said he was listening to it when Pear Harbor was bombed. Said there is a model 55 on it. Also told me it was working perfect about 20 years ago, has not plugged it for that long. Going to get it for the price he is asking.

AK55's are pretty easy to work on, but do have some typical faults, like open audio transformers, and rf chokes. Doug's right about push-pull 45's being a waste on this radio. Let us know what you find when you get it home and do some testing.

If, indeed, it worked 20 years ago, and hasn't been plugged in since, then it might very well be OK now. Best to bring it up with a variac, and watch for problems. It's a little hard for me to imagine what would have gone bad, sitting idle, even for 20 years. No electrolytic caps to go south, and the tubes should be good.
