Hallicrafters S-20R Distortion
8/19/2009 1:07:03 PMWyatt Circo
I have recapped and replaced some resistors in my S-20R. The radio plays but is distorted. Im thinking it could be a grid bias resistor or something. I have already checked the speaker.

Any suggestions?

If you have a copy of the service manual, check the expected tube pin voltages on the voltage chart. They should be within 10% of the given value. This might help you find a possible grid bias issue.

Also try a different speaker to see if that is the problem. I have a Hallicrafters S-107 that becomes distorted after a while. When I use a different speaker the problem goes away

Wyatt,

You might try substituting another 6F6 and see what happens to the distortion. If you replaced the cathode bypass capacitor (10 Mfd), might insure correct polarity. The plus of the capacitor goes to the cathode of the 6F6 and the minus (metal shell of the cap) goes to ground/chassis/B-. Also check the grid (G1) of the 6F6 to see if it's resistor has increased excessively in value. Also there should not be any positive voltage on the grid of the 6F6. If there is, then the coupling cap from the plate of the previous tube may be leaky or the 6F6 may be gassy.
