rca victor (master) follow-up

follow-up about an ac/dc am/shortwave table top RCA Victor (Master)1946/47 I have replaced all the tubes and 2 dial lamps and now the radio will light up or turn on when its plugged in.I was advised to replace the electrolytic filter caps also(which i`m afraid to attempt because of shock dangers).Could this be the reason for a steady hum coming from the radio? It will not recieve any stations on the am or shortwave bands what-so-ever.Nor does the volume affect the loudness of the hum.Am I flogging a dead horse? Is there much trouble to replacing the caps(metal cans on chasis)? Thank you, Joe

Hi Joe

Yes, the electrolytic filter caps are responsible for hum. They need to be replaced. Use values that are close to original with at least the same voltage rating. Be sure the polarity is correct. One lead will be positive, the other negative.

Unplug the radio while replacing the filter caps. You won't get shocked.
