1935 Crosley model 635 Buccaneer

This radio appears to be like new and has original finish. It seems to have been used very little. The inside is really dusty. I would like very much to power it up safely and see if it works. I have heard the best thing to do is power it up in series with a 100 watt light bulb first and to notice if the bulb is brightly lit, in which case I should turn it off and check for transformer problems first.

I would like for some advice on how to safely bring it up to power without increasing any damage that it may have. Does anyone have a step by step procedure for starting it up and what to look for. I would be very grateful for some advice and or procedure.
Thanks very much,
Jim

The use of the 100 Watt bulb is a good way to start off. If you do not have a variable transformer what's called a " Variac " A plug stip with a ciruit breaker in it, is better than nothing. You should replace the filter capacitors, and all the old wax paper ones anyway. Even if it works somewhat now, it's going to need to have that done.

I have this same radio in my collection. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND...NOT just powering it up untill it hase been electroncialy restored first. You may do more dammage and stress to various parts like resistrors, transformers , and other. The capacitors go bad over time and they will need to be replaced....
