Zenith Trans Oceanic 8G005TZ1 Battery Pack Question

Help!

This nice radio pulls in the stations well, I bought a modern battery pack which utilizes 60 AA alkalines and 6 D batteries. Haven't hooked it up yet. However, there is a two pronged battery connector in addition to the main 3-wire four hole connector.

I don't think it goes to a dial light, or at least I didn't find one. The operators manual is just a cryptic "hook two-pronged connector to Z1 battery" What's the deal with that? Is that something like a third battery? The chassis has the older loktal style tubes, except for the rectifier tube which is a 117Z3..

The 8G005 ZTO is the most electrically complicated of the bunch. The Z1 version had some kind of AC power supply mod vs the plain version.

From the schematic, it appears the two pin battery connector is to be hooked to a 1.5 volt cell. This was probably because the high tube count of the unit required 10.5 vs 9.0 volts for the series filaments.
(Red wire / larger pin is positive.) No dial light until a couple models later; -600 model?

Check out http.//www.transoceanic.nostalgiaair.org/ for paperwork on this beast.

Have fun, Greg

Yep, the Z1 connector is for 1.5 volts, which is connected in series with the 9 volt side of the house for a total of 10.5 volts DC; It works fine.

I'm running a total of 10 "D" cells; 4 in parallel for 1.5 volts DC at the Z1 connector, and 6 in series for the 9 volt side of the "B" battery. I'll post longetivity of this arrangement as I play the radio.

Thanks for the help, I appreciate the help. These old radios are great! And tons of thanks to Nostalgia Air for providing such a great place to ask questions about fixing up old radios.

This is a fun hobby! Thanks again for the advice. The trans-oceanics are a lot of fun to tinker around with. I guess I got lucky, and acquired a model without any problems, but I was careful not to fire it up without first reading up a little bit on these great radios. Contact cleaner and a spiffy chassis, I got a love wd-40 too. Hrm, old radios just smell better. I definitely want to explore the battery pack options and make it a true portable.
