Nixies

Hi,

We don't often see nixies in old radios, but I have a question about this!

Question is: Is it normal to see a kind of "blue gaz" inside nixie when a number (orange color) is lit? Are they gassy and near end of life?

I made a nixies clock with IN-14 nixies 1979 NOS from Russia.

Thanks

I have used those before a long time ago in military equipment. none of them had any blue glow. they are neon gas like those little neon bulbs. They glow a very bright orange. Those you have NOS from off shore maybe are just that way. if they are leaky they most times flicker and get dark inside. it's the kind of gas they may have used in the ones you have.

Ok good. Yes they are bright and working well. So I will take them like they are. Thanks!

If they have a little blue glow, all the Nitrogen wasn't removed. If it is a little purple, there may be some Argon in with the Neon. If they work OK, no problem.
