Has this set been recapped? Do a voltage check with everything installed, and write down the voltages, then remove the out put tube and record the voltages. Sounds like something is drawing too much current, might be due to a shorted cap or resistor.
Caps in your power supply are leaky. As the caps warm up they draw current causing voltage to drop. This happens in many Atwater Kent 40 series radios.
If the radio operates for a long period of time volume will drop and current increases. The ballast in your 44 will start glowing red. The ballast can open or power transformer may be damaged.
Replace the caps. Although potted in tar wires from these caps go over metal partitions in the power supply. By using a heat gun tar above these wires can be softened and removed with a screwdriver. Wires can then be cut and new caps installed. New caps will be much smaller and will fit under the power supply connecting board.
