Hallicrafters SW-500

I need some more info on this reciever, so far I know it's general coverage .55 to 30Mhz, with these tubes 12AV6, 12BE6, 12BA6 and 50C5. Is this reciever any good, can I find schematics and tuneup info? Any help would be appreciated. James

Hi,
It is a decent table top shortwave, A little bit better than many of the old shortwave capable radios. It is not really intended as a communications reciever, but it is supposed to have BFO, which will allow you to listen to sideband.

Online, there is no information specific to your radio or the similar SX-120. If you wanted to look through some of the manuals that are online: http://bama.sbc.edu/hallicra.htm

Otherwise a general rule, tuning Hallicrafters is primarily aligning the IF's to a single narrow peak first, align the BFo oscillatorcoil for a null point with knob set to middle position, (the next steps vary because some of the radios have adjustable coils in the tunning sections, and some do not) Starting from the AM broadcast band first, tune the high end of the band (1500 for AM) with the Antenna trimmer for the AM band, Tune the coil at the low end (600 for AM), then set reciever back to high end and adjust tunning padder cap. If yours does not have that combination, but has just two trim or pad caps per band, tune the main section padder for maximum signal with minimum bleedover, and tune oscillator section padder for correct tracking.

John, I was able to find an S-120 manual which included tune-up and a schematic at the site you mentioned below. It's electrically the same, except the cabinet which is a metallic blue instead of gray.
Thanks for your help, James
