I bought this RADIO (floor Model) I bit off more than I could chew, Yeah I got an old trans going and a crosley. Even this shady lil airline... but the schematics were easily ready.... and I was armed with info, and a plug...lol/. this radio is a MARCONI # 45 and it is Battery op. wow where do I begin? do I buy a battery if so what kind???? and what about the schem? and I can build a new speaker cone but ...wiring???Im lost here.
ALSO I have a GUILD RADIO..SPICE CHEST I can not find any info on that.

A schematic for your radio is posted at--

www.nexicom.net/~oidar/marconi45.pdf

Your radio needs 90 volts for the B battery. The filaments were often supplied by an "air cell" or lead acid battery that were 2 volts. The tubes have two volt filaments. I usually build simple power supplies for these radios. Others for testing often "build" batteries from currently available dry cells.

For example 10 nine volt batteries clipped together will get you the 90 volts. The A battery could be built from D cells, two in series will give 3 volts that could be dropped by a resistor or a diode in series to give an acceptable voltage. The A battery life would be short though unless more cells were used in parallel.

Ed posted that earlier, so he might of thought you already got it. It's on this site as well. Model 45 is identical to model 43 it just has the additional tone control. Parts list on the left side of the page in this link.

6/20/2009 2:52:06 PMG. Berg..battery eliminator
Here is an option..instead of al the batteries you can now buy a battery eliminator that supplies all the voltages you need. The Arbe battery eliminator is sold on ebay for $150.00 bucks and if you wana run battery radios it is well worth it. I have one and love it..works perfect for all my battery radios...

The ARBE-III is perfect battery eliminator for a radio repair bench. AES www.tubesandmore.com sells a battery eliminator kit for quite a bit less.

You GUYS ALL OF YOU ARE FABULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The battery eliminator kit sold buy Antique Electronic Supply (AES) is absolute crap. I bought this years ago and all it is is parts and a cheap wooden board that you have to assemble yourself. Also if i remember correctly the AES unit has no overload protector. Let me make myself clear i am not promoting the ARBE III battery eliminator..just that it is a far far superior product.

The ARBE III is now selling for $160 - add shipping and it's $175 - live in Michigan and it's $185. The AES kit is currently on sale for under $50 (without shipping). Unquestionably, the ARBE III is a superior product that is already assembled - and you pay dearly for it and it is confined to a fairly unattractive case. On the other hand, even though the AES kit must be assembled - anyone but the most fumble-fingered G. Berg can do it. If you have ABSOLUTELY NO IMAGINATION (G. Berg again), you'll be confined to assembling it on the supplied pine board... but - with only a single scintilla of vision you can adapt it almost any situation... even build it into the radio itself. At less than a third of the cost of the ARBE - it will fit MOST needs affordably. Heck - for the price of the ARBE you could afford to buy 3 or 4 of the AES versions and supply each radio separately... plus you'll have the satisfaction of building it yourself - rather than playing with yourself like G. Berg.....

I prefer to build my own power supplies from scratch. Simple to do based on an LM317 for the A supply and zener diodes for the B supply. Designs are not hard to find on the web.

The ARBE sounds great but I cannot afford it and I would require several.

so if I were to buy the battery needed, could I ??? What would it be called???

Unfortunately, with the limited information you have given - it would be next to impossible to determine what battery you will need. Is there anything - labels, etc. - inside the radio that will give a clue??? Many batteries for old radios are obsolete and no longer made. Many of those few you can still buy are prohibitively expensive and will eventually wear out - whether you use them or not. In the long run, a battery eliminator may be the most cost-effective option. That said, it may be possible to build up your own battery pack using modern alkaline batteries. "D" cells can often be used for filament voltage and 9-volt batteries can be hooked up in series to obtain the proper "B" voltage. If the radio is a portable - this might be the solution you are looking for - but, again, more information is needed.
