hi. i replaced the audio interstage transformer with a known good one. the volume is still the same. if i turn the volume up to max the stations diappear. im stumped. any ideas welcome. thank you paul.

Audio interstage xfmrs are usually either good or bad (with an open winding). If bad, you would get no audio at all.

As Norm suggested, measure the voltages at all the tube pins. Compare to specs: http://www.atwaterkent.info/TechData/Drawings/Images/AK14900sch.pdf

Or, report back here with all the voltages.

hi,don't forget about the local/distant switch,corrosion here will cut out the first tube reducing volume greatly.

Also, you need a good antenna, connected to the proper binding post.

AND, you need to ensure that the tuning of the unit is on track. If you are losing tracking between capacitors, you will lose a LOT of volume.
