Mercury 6MM790 internal foot switch cable

Hello All,
My previous post has disappeared. Anyway, this is a 1949 model in AR-2 . It's also known as a Ford 6MF780. I am about to complete the restoration but I have one question. Where can a find a 3 conductor with shield electrical cable? The insulation is cracking off the wires from the cable attached to the foot switch jack. This is for fairly high current. But it can't be more that 1/4 inch in diameter. So maybe I can use a piece of old multi conductor shielded cable. I think it was for some telephone usage. Will that work or do I need something heavier?
It only needs to be about 1 foot in length.

Thanks,

Dave

Hello Dave, I have taken several old CB R adios mikes apart and they have 3 wires plus the shield. That is one idea

Jim,
How much current do they handle?

Thanks,

Dave

Dave I would guess the 3 wires in a CB radio mike cable are only maybe an 18 or 20 gauge. So as far as current carrying, I doubt they pass 5 amps. More likely only 2 or 3 amps. Think u said diameter of cable could be no more than 1/4 inch so I just do not know

Dave,

Perhaps you could make your own 3 conductor shielded cable using the braid from some RG8 coxial cable. I haven't tried it with say #14 stranded wire like used in automotive work, but think that maybe three of that size would slide in the RG8 braid. If the outside needed to be insulated, possibly some sort of sleeving or tubing could be slipped over it. It would be nice if the center of the RG8 could be pulled out leaving the braid and outer insulation on the rest of the cable. This is just a thought.
