Hi,

I did a bad thing and recapped all the capacitors at once, now I have an issue. Before the recap, I got static. After the recap, when I turn the voltage up slowly, the rectifying tube glows very brightly. I'm assuming it's getting too much voltage. I would suspect one of the electrolytic capacitors. Does anyone have a checklist of likely culprits? Could I have also damaged a resistor?

Any recommendations for old books that shows a novice how to diagnose though a step-by-step routine? Most of the books I have deal in theory, not in the practical.

Thanks!!

A model number would be helpful.

First I would double check the filter capacitors' polarity and shorts to groun. Also verify the voltage to the heaters/filaments.

Syl, Warren, Thanks! It is a model 48-200. I did reverse the electrolytic C's. I looked at the arrow and the negative mark, and made the conclusion that the arrow follows the flow of electricity. It doesn't, the negative side goes the the negative source.

I replaced the tube and the 3 E. Capacitors. The unit has static when I move the tuner, but there's no background static otherwise, so I need to check if I burned anything else out. Won't make that mistake next time.

Thanks!

If you have the print to your radio, you should go through each capacitor you have replaced. I would start at the power supply, checking for wrong pin connections and the polarity. You say the tube glows bright. I would think there is something connected wrong in the heater circuit right there. If you post a model number. Maybe someone can help you a little more.
