Hallicrafters S 38
5/15/2009 11:37:28 AMDr. T.
Restoring this old 1946 S38 with Riders schematic in volume 15 as a reference. BFO oscillator will not run, however, the actual factory wired BFO circuit is different from the Riders. This circuit uses a 12SQ7 triode with a Hartley oscillator configuration. The factory wiring has a 15K in the plate with a 8200 pf going to ground and several other differences, even the part # on the coil does not match up with the Riders.
Does anyone out there have a revision of this? The chassis is labeled S38 with no suffixes. Thanks in advance. Tom.

The original S38 (no suffix) is the only one with a BFO. Sometime during production of the original S38, Hallicrafters changed the BFO ckt. More info here: http://members.shaw.ca/ve7sl/s38.html

After you get your BFO going and recap it and all, might replace the 12SK7 IF with a 12SG7. Little more gain that way, and a minor touch up with the alignment.

Dr. T,

There is a Halli S38 service bulletin with schematic(s) at:

The file is in LizardTech djvu format.
